Continued Competence Requirements and FAQs [PDF, 131KB]

Continued competency is required for renewal and reinstatement of licenses/certificates.  All active licenses/certificates expire on March 31 of every uneven year. Continued competency credits for the current biennium must be earned from April 1, 2023 through March 31, 2025. Review the following regulation for specifics on continued competency requirements and procedures, 201 KAR 22:045.

Don’t Delay in Seeking Continued Competency Activity Approval

According to 201 KAR 22:045, physical therapists must  complete 30 hours of continued competency activities (20 hours for physical therapist assistants) prior to renewing their credential.  Many of those activities, particularly continuing education courses, require application for review and approval by the American Physical Therapy Association Kentucky Chapter’s Professional Continued Competency Committee.  The review process typically takes 4 - 6 weeks to complete.

Accordingly, the Kentucky Board of Physical Therapy strongly urges all credential holders to take the following actions:

1. Review 201 KAR 22:045 to determine if any of your continuing education activities require review.

2. If your activities require review, please use the Course Attendee Form found on the APTA KY website and submit your form and required documentation to APTA KY.

3. For frequently asked questions regarding the continued competency review process.
Should you have questions regarding course approval, contact APTA KY at (859) 977-7455 or email info@aptaky.org

Print the Continued Competency Tracking Form to track credits earned from 4/1/2021 through 3/31/2023.

The Jurisprudence Exam must be completed by March 31 of every renewal cycle (within the 2 year licensure period (biennium), and will count 2 contact hours towards the total continued competency requirement.

Requesting Hardship and Non-Hardship Extensions for Continued Competency Requirements

If you will be unable to meet your continued competency requirements for the 2023-2025 biennium prior to March 31, 2025, you may request an extension. For information regarding the types of extensions available, deadlines for filing, and how to qualify for an extension

2025 Continuing Competency Audit Procedure

Each biennium, immediately following the completion of the renewal cycle, the Kentucky Board of Physical Therapy randomly audits ten (10) percent of all actively licensed physical therapists and all actively certified physical therapist assistants.
